Mourvèdre

Mourvedre is a late ripening red wine grape variety that produces rich tannic wines with earthy characteristics. The grapes are suited to windy and sandy conditions. It thrives around the Mediterranean in Provence and is the second most planted variety in Spain, its country of origin.

It is planted widely in Australia (where it is sometimes called Mataro) and the US where it is often blended with Grenache and Shiraz (GSM). It produces powerful, full bodied single variety wines and the rich gamey earthiness of Mourvedre has a particularly affinity with the warmth and fruit of Grenache and the structure, spice and tannin of Shiraz.
