he wines we produce all have strong varietal character with excellent flavour intensity. Our flagship Bellbrae Estate wines are the pinnacle of our releases. Made only in the better years they exhibit the best of our vineyards plus high levels of care and commitment in the winery. Quality French oak and traditional winemaking techniques add to the excellence of this range. They are wonderfully drinkable now but are all made to benefit from further cellaring.

BACKGROUND

We have named our premium Bellbrae Estate wines after our acclaimed local surf breaks. Sparrows is a consistent reef break between Bird Rock and Boobs near Torquay which works best on a north west swell with incoming tide.

TASTING NOTES

Continuing on from where we left off with 2017 wine, the 2018 has elegance and fruit drive written all over the first sniff. Lifted aromas of Lime and Citrus fruits are underpinned with a hint of cashew derived from the French oak maturation. The first sip will discover more Citrus fruit drive as well as a hint of Lemon Sherbet with an excellent acid line throughout the palate. Again the subtle use of oak barrels gives the wine structure that the fruit characters and the creamy texture of yeast breakdown from  Battonage, can hang off. Made to be enjoyed now, this wine will also reward the astute collector for 8-10 years.

WINEMAKING

The 2022 vintage Boobs Chardonnay was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and received the royal treatment it deserved in the winery. It spent 10 months on fine lees in French oak barriques, with one third new oak and two thirds 2 to 3 year-old barrels. There was no malolactic fermentation, in order to preserve the purity of fruit and freshness of this wine, but maturation on lees gives it some added mouthfeel and some toasty notes.
