Since being founded by winemaker Kevin Mitchell in 1997, Kilikanoon Wines has built an enviable reputation for consistently crafting outstanding wines. This is demonstrated by the numerous awards and accolades Kilikanoon Wines has received, including recognition from James Halliday in the 2013 Australian Wine Companion as Winery of the Year.
Clare Valley wines are well regarded for elegance, powerful generosity, balance of length and fruitfulness, as well as attractive soft tannins. Kilikanoon Wines attributes much of this to the high diurnal temperature difference – warm, dry days and cool, crisp nights. During the growing season, the grapes ripen under the heat of the sun by day and are refreshed at night, allowing optimal fruit ripeness, tannin and flavour development before the fruit is sugar-ripe, which ensures that acid levels are retained. Skilly Valley Pinot Gris 2023
A local blend sourced mostly from our cool climate Skilly Valley vineyard near the picturesque Kilikanoon cellar door with an addition from our high altitude Trillians Hill vineyard in Penwortham.
Winemaking
Once harvested, each parcel was kept separate, drained and very lightly pressed before the juices were cold settled. The racked juices were fermented cool at 14 degrees for three weeks before one parcel had its ferment arrested just before dryness, leaving a small amount of retained grape sugar to provide the final cuvée with some additional texture and structure.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Pale straw with some subtle ‘Gris’ tints to its appearance. Brilliant in clarity.
Nose: Lifted aromas of Japanese pear, green apple, cinnamon spice and fresh quince enliven the nose.
Palate: Fresh and lively with a rounded texture and a fine acidic backbone, the palate beautifully combines the fresh flavours of green apples, international pears and ‘just picked’ quinces with the exotic spicy undertones of cinnamon and cloves, in a long and indulgent finish.
