Ricca Terra, Riverland SA
Ricca Terra is the creation of husband & wife team, Ashley & Holly Ratcliff. In 2003 they purchased their first vineyard in Barmera, South Australia.
Their vision was to plant, nurture & make wine from grape varieties best suited to Australia’s warm & dry climate. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot quickly made way for Nero d’Avola, Montepulciano, Tinta Barroca, Fiano, Vermentino and many other Mediterranean varieties.
Ricca Terra is recognised for its innovation, leadership & vision, which helps contribute to the future reputation & excitement of Australian Wine. Winner of the Gourmet Traveller Viticulturist of the Year, Ashley & Holly have challenged tradition & forged lasting change with their vineyards & wines.
Varietal Mix
Mediterranean red grape varietal blend –Rosé (Negroamaro, Grenache, Greco & Nero d’Avola)
The Blend
The red grapes used to make this rosé wine are perfect for wine quality, but they also thrive in Australia’s warm ‘Mediterranean’ climate. All the grape varieties selected for the ‘Colour of Calmness’ can be co-fermented to increase the complexity of the wine.
The Story
After spending time working as a viticulturist in Southern Italy, Ricca Terra Farms’ Ashley Ratcliff, fell in love with the locally produced pale red wines and how they enchanted the villagers that consumed them in iced filled tumblers under the summer sun. This moment in time brought an apparent ‘calmness’ to a busy vintage.
The creation of rosé wine was never an afterthought for the Southern Italian winemakers with whom Ashley spent time. The careful selection of grape varieties that imposed flavour and natural acidity into a wine was paramount.
Ashley has selected and planted a number of Mediterranean grape varieties at Ricca Terra Farms that produce amazing rosé wines, in particular Negroamaro, Grenache and Greco.
Tasting Notes
"A lick of creamy texture is preceded by aromas of watermelon and tease of blue fruit. The aromas flow neatly to the mouth, almost undisturbed only to be met by watermelon rind and the dance of red berry fruit. The creamy drive builds momentum to a long and refreshing finish. Good drinking." qwinereviews.com
