Martinborough, New Zealand. The 2022 Runholder Pinot Noir showcases aromas of black cherry, plum, and spice. This wine has a velvety texture and is full of rich, ripe fruit accented by subtle oak.

"tee-kigh-runga" - where the soil is rich and the food is plentiful, Te Kairanga is one of Martinborough's founding vineyards established over 20 years ago. In keeping with the pioneering spirit surrounding the vineyard, a number of Te Kairanga wines have hailed from Martinborough's history and that of its inhabitants dating back to 1879.

The wine region of Martinborough is located at the foot of New Zealand's North Island at a latitude of 42 degrees south. Over 20,000 years the Ruamahanga River has carved out dramatic cliffs and escarpments to expose stony sub-soils, built up layers of alluvial river terraces and cast its silty river loam across the landscape. The stone-filled river terraces are free-draining while the top soils vary from slope to slope. A rain shadow effect created by the Rimutaka Ranges to the south-west and the Tararua Ranges to the west keeps the region dry. This combination of ‘terroir’ factors means that Martinborough vineyards are typically low-yielding, enhancing fruit intensity. Martinborough’s long ripening season, with cool night and warm daytime temperatures, slowly builds the structure needed to create complex Pinot Noir’s and aromatic whites.
