Pierre-Jean Villa
Pierre-Jean Villa had always worked the land be it in Spain or in France, and began his working life in wine with Mommessin at Clos de Tart in 1992. In 2003 Pierre-Jean returned to the Rhone valley joining the trio of the 'Wines of Vienne' and established Domaine Pierre-Jean Villa in 2009. Pierre-Jean’s base is in Chavanay where the back drop to his winery are his steep, part bush-trained and part guyot ‘archduke’ trained vineyards (the cane wraps around the posts), Appellation Condrieu.
Pierre-Jean Villa’s other vineyards lie in St Joseph (for white and red), Crozes Hermitage and Côte Rotie. Pierre-Jean is working towards organic certification with currently 8 hectares out of 12 certified. Today, 100% of Pierre-Jean’s vineyards have been propagated from his own Massal selection, for new and re-planted vineyards. In the winery Pierre-Jean works in a non-interventionist way with gentle, gravity flow processes, indigenous yeasts and utilising the lunar calendar for racking and bottling.
