Three Dark Horses | McLaren Vale | South Australia

Three Dark Horses is the new project for former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead. When the opportunity arose in 2009 to make wine from Bruno Romano’s old vineyard in the Seaview sub region of McLaren Vale- Matt teamed up with his father Alan and grandfather Frank and the Three Dark Horses were born. Today Matt and Alan run this small label with Matt’s 89-year-old grandfather Frank a vintage regular. Their focus is on producing small batch, hand made, and affordable wines of character. All of the work is done in our small facility 10 minutes north of McLaren Vale. The range consists of a Grenache Rose, a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Touriga Nacional, a single vineyard old vine Grenache and a single vineyard Shiraz.

Our History
Three Dark Horses produced its first vintage in 2009 using Shiraz and Grenache from McLaren Vale and Touriga Nacionale from Langhorne Creek. The Shiraz and Grenache were matured in French and American oak for 18 months before blending with soft, berry flavoured unoaked Touriga. The result was a unique blend of dark cherries and raspberries with hints of dried spices and herbs. The 2010 vintage was released in June 2012, a range of three wines: the trademark Shiraz Grenache Touriga blend and straight Shiraz and Touriga varietals. Just in time for summer, the 2012 Grenache Rose and 2011 Grenache will be released, both wines well suited to drinking in the warmer months. Three Dark Horses will continue to source fruit of very high quality and our new fermentation techniques will deliver unique wines that will continue to please the palates of wine drinkers for many years to come
