Château Quintus
Perched on a 62-meter-high limestone hillock, Château Quintus is located at the south-western end of the Saint-Emilion plateau. Surrounded by some of the most eminent estates in Saint-Emilion, the property boasts some of the finest land and exposures in the region. The originality of this extraordinary terroir lies in its diversity of soils, slopes and orientations. Made up of 28 hectares of vines that have today attained an optimum average age of 30 years, the estate naturally wraps itself around a high natural promontory and also offers 360o breath-taking views across to the village of Saint-Emilion and over the entire Dordogne valley.
Le Dragon de Quintus
The inspiration for the name ˝Dragon de Quintus˝ came from the vineyard’s privileged location on a promontory at the edge of the Saint-Emilion plateau, as well as from the history of the watchtower built there to defend the village.
In Western mythology, the dragon is represented as a very intelligent creature, usually the guardian of a priceless treasure benefitting from exceptional sight.
This symbol of the keeper and protector of a magic terroir, observing this boundless panorama, is how we came to personify the second wine of Château Quintus.
The Climate
The 2012 vintage was uneven from bud break, which was disturbed by a cool, wet month of April, to véraison (color change), which took place over a long period. Fortunately, the months of July and August were ideal: warm and dry. This fine summer weather enabled us to do everything possible in the vineyard in order to make up for the poor spring weather. For two months, our team worked meticulously to make ripening as homogeneous as possible, and removed any green grapes at véraison. The harvest for both red and white wines began under sunny skies. 2012 is a truly fine vintage for early-ripening terroirs such as ours.
Tasting Note
The first word that comes to mind here is: harmonious. The wine is attractive, very round, smooth and fresh, with red fruit, redcurrant and blueberry overtones. It will be ready to drink fairly young and should provide a great deal of pleasure.
