Domaine André Bonhomme
The wines of André Bonhomme were a happy discovery during our scouting expedition for affordable burgundy at ProWein this year. The estate was founded by André and wife Gisèle in 1956, making it the first domaine of what is now the Viré-Clessé appellation. Back then they just had four hectares of vines which they’d inherited from André’s father Joseph, who grew grapes for the cooperative in the village of Viré. The wines have always been bottled at the domaine, which now extends to 12 hectares of vineyards. These have been organically farmed since 2001 and certified from vintage 2014.
2022 André Bonhomme Viré-Clessé Cuvée Spéciale
The domaine's cuvée spéciale is a blend incorporating different parcels and winemaking. The fruit comes from vines aged between 28 and 70 years on clay-limestone soils. Part of the blend is fermented and aged for a year in oak casks, the balance in stainless steel. For the second year of élevage takes place entirely in steel. The family sees this as a true gastronomic wine on the basis of its aromatic complexity and length, as well as its roundness.
Tasting Notes
(began in 70% oak, none new, and 30% stainless steel, and was then moved entirely into stainless steel for the second year; from 45-to-75-year-old vines): Bright light yellow. Quince and citrus peel aromas convey an impression of tangy acidity. Quite concentrated, tactile and full but also linear and backward, conveying a distinctly dry impression to its flavors of citrus and fresh stone fruits and saline minerality. This is the estate's second wine, priced between the Brenillons and Vieilles Vignes bottlings. This juicy, youthfully edgy wine has the spine to age.
