SCOTT MCCARTHY
Winemaker Scott McCarthy was born in the wine game. From the moment he was old enough to walk his father had him in the family vineyard picking grapes. Scott joined Yalumba and after spending 10 years working in the Barossa Valley, he spent a number of years in areas as diverse as the USA's Napa Valley, the Loire Valley and Languedoc region in France, and Marlborough, in New Zealand. He came to realise that making wines from a cool climate region was where his true winemaking passion lay, and as a result he settled back in Australia at one of the best cool climate regions in the world; the Yarra Valley.
Heathcote Shiraz 2021
Why do we make a Heathcote Shiraz in our Ingram Road range of wines? It’s simple. The combination of ancient Cambrian soil and hot climate up there produces a style of Shiraz that is too good to be missed. Sourced from a single block of vines, the fruit produced to make this style of wine is quintessentially Heathcote. Outstanding in its ability to coat your mouth with intense dark fruits and savoury spice, this wine is the perfect match for heavy red meats on a cold winter night in front of the fire.
WINEMAKERS NOTES
Once picked the fruit is destemmed then gently crushed to maintain whole berries. From there it is transferred to open-top fermenters, sitting on skins for 14 days. From there it is pressed off, settled and racked into French Oak barriques (20%) new, for 14 months to mature. 2018
VINTAGE REPORT
Heathcote had average winter rain and a drier than normal spring. Rainfall in January provided some much needed relief from the heat, and the vineyard responded in turn, providing the vines with strong, healthy canopies to ripen the seasons fruit. Average temperatures remained high through the entire ripening period leading to the development of robust flavours in the fruit. Look for intensity and rich mouthcoating wines from Heathcote.
TASTING NOTES
Intense deep red with purple edge. Plump dark fruits, blueberry, spice and liquorish. Soft, rich, mouthcoating, balanced tannin, cured meats and wild spice.
