Eden Hall Wines is a family owned boutique winery established in 1997 by David and Mardi Hall in the high country of the beautiful Eden Valley. A total of 33 hectares is planted to red varieties consisting of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and white varieties including Riesling, Viognier and more recently Grüner Veltliner.
The wines are made from estate grown fruit by two of the best winemakers in the Barossa and they were chosen for their particular strengths. Christa Deans, who is the regarded as the 'Queen of Eden Valley Riesling', has produced the white wines since 2004 and Kym Teusner, one of the 'Barons of the Barossa', has been entrusted to make the red wines since 2007.
The Eden Hall team embrace the philosophy of producing high quality wine grapes using eco-friendly, sustainable land management practices that ensure both long-term landscape and viticultural viability.
Eden Hall 'Springton' Shiraz 2021
The growing season started well with above average early winter rains that filled the soils and dams, however it was dry from then on. Temperatures were above average in spring allowing the vines to get away to a good healthy start.
The dry weather meant that when the night time temperature dipped there were again late season frosts, but thankfully not damaging at Avon Brae. Summer was generally mild with the exception of a few days of extreme heat after New Year that were associated with the outbreak of the Sampson Flat bushfires in the Adelaide Hills on 2 January. The damaging fires burned for 7 days in the Adelaide Hills and despite some anxious days, the fires were far enough away that they had no impact on the Eden Valley.
Thirty millimetres of rain on 8 January helped quell the fires and refreshed the vines. Near perfect ripening conditions followed leading into an earlier than usual harvest. The Grüner Veltliner was first to come off, handpicked by our extended family, Riesling and Viognier were next with it all picked by the second week of March. Shiraz and Cabernet ripened at the same time this year and were harvested around Easter.
Tasting Notes
The Eden Hall Springton Shiraz is deep crimson-red, with savoury spice and black pepper on the nose. Ripe black fruit and lifted raspberry and prunes give way to fine, dusty tannins that linger seductively and make you want for more. Let go, drink some more now, but can be cellared with confidence if you must.
