TURKEY FLAT VINEYARDS BAROSSA VALLEY
Turkey Flat owns two estate vineyards within the Barossa Valley- the original 'Turkey Flat' near Bethany, and the sloping, westerly-facing Stonewell in the heart of the Barossa Valley. They are both in very different sub-regions and give us the ability to blend the attributes of each sub-region into our wines.
To a large degree our winemaking begins in the vineyard. We spend a great deal of time managing vine vigour, controlling shoot growth as well as shoot and bunch thinning. This helps to reduce yields and open up the vines to let in the sunlight. We are also spending a lot more time trying to understand when the grapes are mature.
We are not industrial winemakers and try at all times to keep the winemaking process simple and traditional, to not interfere with the true expression of the vineyard.
2021 GRENACHE
VARIETY 100% GRENACHE
Grenache has its origins in Spain and is particularly well suited to the Barossa climate due to its ability to withstand extremes of heat, aridity and wind.
The fruit for this wine was predominantly sourced from 98 year old Grenache vines grown on the Turkey Flat Vineyard. These old vines produce fantastically concentrated fruit which translates into a style of Grenache for which Turkey Flat has become famous.
These vines are traditionally spur pruned, in the goblet style of Southern France and yields are kept low (around 2 tonnes/acre or approximately 32 hectolitres/hectare) producing wines of exceptional quality.
To retain the perfect balance of fruit, tannin, herbaceousness & spice, critical attention is paid to the ripeness levels of fruit prior to hand-picking. A carefully chosen ratio of new & old French oak with the right toast bring this style, our winemaker's obsession, to life.

This darker style also pairs exceptionally well with steak, particularly when aged.
TASTING NOTES
The wine is one of power, balance and is exceptionally varietal. The nose delivers black fruit and a subtle hint of bracken. The palate follows with a rich body of fruit and layered space, bound by a deep structure and modest oak integration.
