Torzi Matthews 'Frost Dodger' Shiraz 2021

Torzi Matthews 'Frost Dodger' Shiraz 2021
Eden Valley, South Australia. A wine of some complexity. Purple maroon coloured, this has a nose of
molten purple fruit, chocolate and a little mint. Love the mint. Despite
the alcohol, the only note of dried fruit is on the nose, the palate
inky and purple jubey but quite pretty and balanced. Maybe even elegant
(for a rich and full red).Ultimately this is real wine. Just rich, and
layered and minty and finely tannic. Quality, commendable, big rich
wine...

Torzi Matthews is a food and winemaking partnership between Domenic Torzi and Tracy Matthews. Both share a passion and firm conviction of appreciating the value of heritage in the crafting of their wines and olive produce.

In 1996 they stumbled across a small, frost-pocketed hollow in the beautiful Mt McKenzie, Eden Valley and fell in love with the area for its remoteness and its diverse thin soils. The rationale was quite simple: this land would produce low yields of fruit which in turn would translate into flavoursome European style wines – the style of wines needed to match their Mediterranean food.

Torzi Matthews also produces wines under the Vigna Cantina label that introduces their Italian family native varietals and those outside the Italian wares that they seek interest to explore. These wines are truly wonderful in their aromatics and fresh lively fruit flavours that are the pinnacle of Mediterranean food pairing.

Vintage

Average winter rains and average fruit set was a sign of a low cropping vintage with spring as per usual serving up a slight frost during the 1st week of November reducing yields by 10%. The summer months between December and March was dry, mild to warm conditions with no temperature extremes leading into April harvest to produce a generous complex shiraz bursting with deep aromatics and flavours.

Wine Making

In the garage the shiraz fruit was gently destemmed including 35% whole bunch into open top milk vats and fermented warm with natural bearing yeasts birthed from the vineyard with soft pump overs, hand plunging and basket pressed to barrel to complete ferment. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Expect all that this label represents; wine enjoyment!
