Medhurst Wines: "Estate Grown, Low Cropped, Hand Made"
Medhurst Wines is the realisation of the long held and shared vision of Ross and Robyn Wilson to make wines of provenance from their Yarra Valley property. Each Medhurst wine reflects the site and variety from which it is made and the season in which it is grown.
The Medhurst Vineyard was particularly chosen for its favourable microclimate, north facing slopes, good drainage and magnificent aspect. It was planted in 2000 with chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.
With the sole objective of making the best wine possible, careful vineyard management ensures yields are low, averaging two tonnes per acre and providing intensely flavoured fruit.
Each parcel of fruit receives the same care and attention in the winery as in the vineyard. New and older French oak is used after considering the potential for each parcel. The wines that result are released only when they are ready and are of the standard to which Medhurst is committed. At all times quality is paramount.
Tasting Notes
What can you do with Yarra Valley sauvignon blanc? We have continued to treat it mean and it loves it. Full solids ferment? New French oak? Wild yeast? Yes, yes and yes to all three, as well as some neglect and attempted malolactic fermentation (it started, but stopped when it got too cold). We like to really mess with it, so again this year we used brand-new Botte and a brand-new Puncheon for a funky, full-solids ferment, and then made sure the rest of the wine was in our crustiest, oldest French oak barriques. Despite this maltreatment, we still recognise sauvignon blanc aromas and flavours - it's the Rocky Balboa of varieties - we throw all our punches and it soaks them up.
So if you like SB, or especially if you don't, you might like what we've created.
