Kumeu, Auckland. This wine offers aromas of honeyed toast and cashews with a pronounced core of ripe nectarines and grapefruit plus a complimentary citrus lift. Medium-bodied, the palate provides great concentration with a nice yeasty character coming through in the long finish. Kumeu River Chardonnay is drawn from six different vineyard sites in the Kumeu Region. We are particularly careful in selecting only the very best grapes from these vineyards for our Kumeu River Estate label.
This wine drinks beautifully but will benefit greatly from a period of two to four years ageing.
The Brajkovich family came to New Zealand; brought wine making knowledge with them from Croatia to their new adopted home; and went on to be a founding family of the New Zealand wine industry.
Just as the Brajkovich family has grown, so too has the winery itself. Extensions and additions mark the milestones that have seen business adapt and expand over the years. Today, the winery produces around 250,000 bottles annually from 30 hectares of its own vineyards in Kumeu, and another 10 hectares from local growers.
"At a recent blind tasting of Kumeu River Chardonnays back to 2007, comparing them with some of the finest white burgundy equivalents, suggests that Kiwi Chardonnays, at least from this top producer, can more than hold their own. As for value, they won hands down, costing a fraction of the wines they trounced." Jancis Robertson MW.
