Schild Estate
Schild Estate wines are created with authenticity and passion. From real earth in the Southern Barossa by generations of a family who have made that place their home.
Ed Schild purchased the Tweedies Gully vineyard in 1977, noting that with its westerly aspect, high altitude and sandy loam soils, the vineyard was a perfect fit for premium Riesling production.
Taking advantage of the cooling afternoon gully winds, particularly in the Summer, the vineyard whilst located on the Barossa Valley side of the line shows a number of characters more akin to its close neighbour, Eden valley.
A single vineyard expression of this variety and now such an important part of the Schild stable, we can’t imagine life before we made Riesling from this unique patch of Barossa dirt.
Ben Reserve Shiraz
Upon purchasing the Three Springs property in 1952, Ben Schild transformed the land into a mixed farm with a focus on sustainable viticulture and planted the seed that would one day become Schild Estate.
Sourced from a carefully selected single vineyard parcel in the hills overlooking Lyndoch, this wine has been created as a fitting tribute to the man that started the family’s long association with viticulture and winemaking in the Barossa.
The 2009 vintage was fermented in small open fermenters before being matured in a combination of French, American and Hungarian oak for 24 months and then undergoing a further 24 months maturation in bottle prior to release.
Winemaker’s Notes
Despite some early heat during January, the remainder of the 2009 harvest was characterized by cooler than expected temperatures. This allowed vines to recover, complete veraison and for the fruit to ripen slowly ensuring that a number of the resulting wines, show characteristics often more associated with a cooler year. Chief amongst these are a surprising level of balance, finer structure and some intense perfume and aromatics.
Colour: Deep, dark purple.
Bouquet: An intense creamy perfume of lifted violets and blue fruits.
Palate: Vibrant fruit flavours of blueberry crumble and dark plums show clearly in the mouth along with hints of restrained black pepper spice and cardamom. These are framed by a fine soft tannin framework which provides structure and direction before finishing with notes of lifted fruit perfume and a hint of well integrated oak.
