Schild Estate
Schild Estate wines are created with authenticity and passion. From real earth in the Southern Barossa by generations of a family who have made that place their home.
Ed Schild purchased the Tweedies Gully vineyard in 1977, noting that with its westerly aspect, high altitude and sandy loam soils, the vineyard was a perfect fit for premium Riesling production.
Taking advantage of the cooling afternoon gully winds, particularly in the Summer, the vineyard whilst located on the Barossa Valley side of the line shows a number of characters more akin to its close neighbour, Eden valley.
A single vineyard expression of this variety and now such an important part of the Schild stable, we can’t imagine life before we made Riesling from this unique patch of Barossa dirt.
Alma Chardonnay
This wine is dedicated to "Alma Schild”, who raised a family of eight children in primitive conditions whilst supporting her husband Ben in establishing the Schild family vineyards and is a testament to her understanding, perseverance and sheer hard work.
Sourced from the family’s finest parcel of Chardonnay off the Moorooroo Vineyard near Rowland Flat, the goal for our winemakers here has been to produce a wine which is varietally strong, retains its element of refreshingness, but possesses interest and complexity for the drinker. Varying degrees of oak barrel and stainless steel use, lees stirring and malolactic fermentation are all used in an effort to make a wine "with no arms and legs sticking out” and in which "Alma Schild” would be proud.
Winemaker’s Notes
A consistent ripening season with relatively mild temperatures has ensured that the 2012 vintage is seen by many as a particularly strong year for both white and red wines. Good natural acid retention, strong varietal definition and an intense depth of flavour were hallmarks of the year particularly on Chardonnay, but across all white wines. The winemaking focus was then on enhancing, supporting and preserving these without too much interference from us.
Colour: Pale Straw
Bouquet: Fragrant notes of nectarine and white peaches coupled with more delicate glimpses of floral blossom perfume and hints of nuttiness and spice.
Palate: A expansive, complex mouth feel where vibrant notes of white peaches and nougat have been softened and accentuated by extended lees stirring and a subtle oak framework, which provides just enough control to ensure that element of balance is retained. Clean citrus pith acidity then provides some freshness, drive and length through to the finish.
Winemakers: Scott Hazeldine and Alex MacClelland
