Schild Estate
Schild Estate wines are created with authenticity and passion. From real earth in the Southern Barossa by generations of a family who have made that place their home.
Ed Schild purchased the Tweedies Gully vineyard in 1977, noting that with its westerly aspect, high altitude and sandy loam soils, the vineyard was a perfect fit for premium Riesling production.
Taking advantage of the cooling afternoon gully winds, particularly in the Summer, the vineyard whilst located on the Barossa Valley side of the line shows a number of characters more akin to its close neighbour, Eden valley.
A single vineyard expression of this variety and now such an important part of the Schild stable, we can’t imagine life before we made Riesling from this unique patch of Barossa dirt.
The Merlot was sourced from high on the eastern edge of the Barossa Valley off our Angus Brae and Three Springs vineyards. Here, sheltered hillsides and cooling afternoon gully winds coming down from Eden Valley, temper the warm Barossa sunshine and ensure conditions are ideal for ripening Merlot.
Harvested in the cool of the early hours, the fruit is crushed to traditional open top fermenters where a combination of soft handling techniques are used to try and obtain a balance between the plush round textural qualities so often associated with Merlot and some interest and structure from work on the soft tannins.
Colour: Deep cherry red.
Bouquet: Fresh and focused with aromas of dark plums and fresh cherries supported by secondary notes of marzipan and pastry in the background.
Palate: A soft, fleshy attack on the front palate show cases some further hints of plums and intense fruit. This is followed by some lifted lightness on the palate weight and both combine to provide a soft, textural feel to the wine. A fine tannin framework then kicks in keeping it all in place and focused.
Winemakers: Scott Hazeldine and Alex MacClelland.
