For the past four generations, the Vietti family has been producing wine in Castiglione Falletto, a small medieval village located in the centre of the Langa region of Piemonte, and more specifi cally the designated region for the cultivation of vines for the production of Barolo.
Vietti is very much a family run entity. Over recent years Luca Currado-Vietti has gradually taken over the winemaking direction from his father Alfredo, and Luca’s brother-in-law Mario Cordero responsibility for sales and marketing from Luca’s mother Luciana. Luca’s wife Elena Penna assists with administration and public relations. Each family member is closely linked to the overall objective, to produce the highest quality wines, whilst retaining respect for the traditions of the specific appellations, and focussing on achieving the best results from specific vineyard sites.
Growing Region
This is a wonderful vintage for Perbacco. The Perbacco is made from parcels in : Bricco Boschis, Liste, Brunella, Crocetta, Pernanno, Fossati, Ravera in Novello and Scarrone (planted in 2003). The average age of the vines is 35 years, and the plants per hectare are 4.500. All vineyards are vinified and aged separately. 18-28 days of alcoholic fermentation between 28°-35°. It follows the malolactic in stainless steel tank and barrels.
Method
The first part of the ageing is done in barriques for 4 months ( only some cru vineyards ) and then in Slovenian oak casks for a further 20 months. Before the final blending for the bottling of the Barolo Castiglione, certain casks are selected for the Nebbiolo Perbacco.
Conditions
Winter was long and cold with copious snow, guaranteeing excellent soil water reserves. Spring was wet and mild temperatures throughout the growing season, presented some disease concerns in June, and the expectation of a late harvest. Warm sunny weather arrived for the last 10 days of August and throughout September with exceptionally large diurnal temperature shifts. All this led to healthy berries with excellent acidity levels and aromatic vibrancy especially in the whites. 2010 is a vintage all about site selection and Nebbiolo. Barbera and Dolcetto required good sunlight exposure to keep acids and tannins respectively in check. Those vineyards well managed and situated, produced excellent wines in 2010. The classic autumn conditions ensured Nebbiolo will shine in 2010 with great acid balance, phenolic and sugar ripeness and sublime aromatics.
