Shaw and Smith is an alliance between cousins Martin Shaw & Michael Hill-Smith. Their aim is to make contemporary, high quality wines that are outstanding examples of their type made from grapes grown in the Adelaide Hills.
Shaw and Smith specialise in grape varieties suited to the cooler climate of the Adelaide Hills, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay & Shiraz.
The vineyard is located on a 28 ha property planted at Woodside Vineyard with new plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir at Balhannah.
2012 Tasting Notes
The light colour belies the intensity of this wine. Red fruit aromas in the red cherry and redcurrant spectrum carry through onto the palate. A medium bodied style, with some savoury elements, and a firm, grippy finish, with tautness and strictness that bodes well for cellaring.

Vintage
2012 was a terrific vintage. Beautiful weather, without extremes of temperature, produced pristine fruit with great flavours. The only downside was that crops were lower than expected, but a price we were more than happy to pay for great quality.
Source
From the block behind the Shaw + Smith winery at Balhannah. This north - facing block was planted to MV6 and 777 clones in 2000. Crop restricted to less than 1.5 tonnes per acre (1.5kg per vine) .
Vinification
Hand picked to avoid fruit damage. Destemmed, crushed followed by a short cold maceration. Fermented on skins in small 2 tonne bins. Malolactic fermentation in barrel.
Maturation
Matured in a combination of new, one and two year old French oak barrels .
Cellaring
Ideal drinking from 2015 - 2018.
History
Pinot Noir is the most temperamental of varieties and remains the ultimate challenge for many winemakers – Shaw + Smith has joined the quest albeit in a ‘small batch’ way. Site selection, the right clonal mix, miniscule yields and fastidious vineyard management are essential to success.
