Mitchell, Clare Valley

Jane and Andrew Mitchell established the winery in 1975 on the Mitchell family property in the western hills of the Clare Valley in South Australia. An old sandstone apple store was converted to serve as a rustic cellar door sales area. Continued growth has resulted in further development of the winery buildings and winemaking plant.

Currently some 500-700 tonnes of premium fruit is crushed and processed in a well equipped modern winery. The imposing two-storey century-old family home sits amid the vineyards, overlooking the winery.

Vinification
Fermented mostly in small open tanks with hand plunging with a significant portion given extended maceration on skins for 40 days.

Maturation
Aged in small French oak barrels for 24 months then bottled without filtration.

Aroma
Released at 7 years of age the wine has a superb mature nose still showing some blackcurrant aromas but also cedary character of mature cabernet.

Palate
The palate has cabernet austerity, a fine dry palate and long lingering dry tannins.

Vintage Notes
Good rains through winter and spring set the vines up well for the long dry summer. A trouble free growing season meant the vines were healthy and ripened their fruit perfectly.
