Jane and Andrew Mitchell established the winery in 1975 on the Mitchell family property in the western hills of the Clare Valley.
The grapes for the Mitchell wines come mostly from the company’s three local vineyards, which sit at an altitude between 300 and 400 metres. The soils are red-brown loam and clay over limestone. The largest vineyard is located at Watervale. The ‘Peppertree’ Shiraz takes its name from the old peppertree, which grows in the Shiraz vineyard at Watervale.
While many insist on pursuing woody, overtly peppery styles of shiraz, Mitchell prefer to follow traditionally subtle, earthy wines of the Rhone, home of the mighty shiraz grape since before the Roman invasion.
One of the warmest driest years we have experienced resulted in a very early vintage with low volumes. However there were very few extremely hot days rather just a consistently warm season.
Vineyards Watervale. Totally dry grown vineyard yielding just 1 tonne per acre (ie 17 Hl per Hectare) Grapes picked by hand.
Tasting Notes
Colour Bright crimson Bouquet/Palate The nose is cedary with spicy – herbal notes. There is lively, vibrant cherry fruit flavours on the palate, indicative of the cool vintage conditions. The tannins are fine and soft but sustained giving the wine a very long lingering palate. Cellaring Perfectly balanced now but with excellent long term cellaring potential.
