Circe is a partnership inspired by growing up on the Mornington Peninsula and a love of Pinot Noir.
Dan Buckle and Aaron Drummond met at Mount Langi Ghiran in 2007. After a vintage of Shiraz it was inevitable that the conversation would turn to any other varietal except Shiraz. With both of us growing up on the Mornington Peninsula, we were keen and curious as to what we could do with Pinot Noir from such great soil.
The name Circe derives from Homer and is a nice metaphor for the seductions – and perils – of Pinot Noir. Dan studied arts at university before realising it wouldn’t help him get a job. He then went on to oenology. At least his studies of the classics helped us develop a name. Good for something I guess?
Tasting Notes
"The second vintage of releases from Circe wines are immensely appealing to me. May the partnership between Dan Buckle and Aaron Drummond continue to flourish. Slightly off topic, I was speaking to Dan at his recent Sparkling Summit (held at Chandon where he is now head winemaker) and he mentioned the challenges involved in tasting Sparkling bases first thing in the morning and then moving onto still, table Chardonnays. "I feel like I have to clean them all up!” BOOM!!!
More flesh than the Red Hill South Vineyard version. It’s apparent on the nose and in the mouth. Which is not to say it lacks detail or incisiveness. Citrus and nectarine flecked with honeydew melon, all held together with integrated acidity and smoked almond oak. More emphasis on texture here but it’s punchy through the finish with flinty accents. A triumph in every way. Excellent"
