Punt Road Wines
The Napoleone Family have been orchardists in the Yarra Valley for three generations. In 1983 they established their first vineyard in the sub-region of Coldstream. The wines are crafted by Kate Goodman at the Punt Road winery and are a true reflection of the variety, the site and the region.
Punt Road is a reference to the busy iconic road of the same name in the middle of Melbourne. In the 1850’s Punt Road was a quiet dirt road that met the Yarra River on the outskirts of the city. The road was surrounded by some of the first commercial vineyards in Victoria, and was linked across the river by a punt, which would ferry people and goods to the other side.
Punt Road remains today in the heart of cosmopolitan Melbourne. A bridge now stands where the punt once was, and the vineyards have been re-established throughout the Yarra Valley, where the grapes for this wine are grown today
Winemaking
Hand harvested fruit was gently whole bunched pressed to minimise the pick up of phenolic characters and fermented with cool temperatures to retain freshness. The pinot noir component was barrel fermented to aid complexity. After a careful blending process the base wine was tiraged to allow secondary fermentation to occur in the bottle. The wine was aged for three years on lees to give classic yeast complexity and richness to the final wine.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw with a fine bead and persistent mousse. The aroma is lifted and complex exhibiting notes of lemon curd, citrus flowers , subtle nectarine and freshly baked croissant ( biscotti ) . The palate is well balanced with delicate fruit flavours combined with creamy brioche notes. A fine acid structre leads to a crisp yet soft lingering finish with flavours of citrus and nougat. This wine has great depth of character from the extended lees aging yet retains a fresh vibrancy of life.
