Vineyard
Johnson Estate is the family owned vineyards that supplies fruit to both the Spy Valley and Envoy ranges of wines.
Nearly 400 acres of vineyards are sited in the lower Waihopai Valley on the terraces of the Omaka River. Predominantly flat, three distinct land types are encountered, each subject to their own microclimatic influences.
1. Very young, stony free draining lower riverside terraces.
2. Older terraces with deeper topsoils, higher clay content with underlying river gravels.
3. Omaka Valley North facing hill slopes with deep loess soils.
With vines planted from 1993, Johnson Estate is established and consistent in its production of quality fruit for Spy Valley Wines.
With careful and prudent management and an expert empathetic understanding of site and climate, Johnson Estate is regarded as one of Marlborough's finest cool climate vineyards.
Spy Valley consistently delivers varietally true wines to the global discerning customer. Fruit for Spy Valley comes from the company estate vineyards in the lower Waihopai Valley and from select vineyard sites in Marlborough's Wairau and Southern Valley areas. Wines are all sealed with screwcap closures to preserve the integrity of the vineyards and the winemakers skills in producing youthful, exuberant wines bursting with fruit flavour and aroma.
Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Sauvignon Blanc is grown in our Marlborough vineyard on stony riverbed terraces, gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks to give intense passionfruit and gooseberry fruit characters. The wine is fruit-driven in style, with complexity from lees ageing for several months in stainless steel tanks before bottling. This wine is a classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with intense flavours and crisp acid in a dry style.
Viticulturist Adam McCone
Soils Shallow and stony soils with overlying sandy loam.
Winemakers Paul Bourgeois and Kathy-Lee Sowman
Winemaking After picking and gently pressing each vineyard block was fermented separately before blending and bottling.
