Loimer
Fred Loimer studied winemaking at Klosterneuburg and worked in Germany’s Nahe and the Schug winery in California before returning in 1997 to his family’s estate in Langenlois within the greater Kamptal area. A year later Fred purchased the former cellar of the Haindorf Castle on top of which he constructed a modern black cube symbolizing his love for modern elegance, reflected in his wines.
In the vineyard Fred follows a high density regime (6000 vines per hectare) to contain yields. The vines are trained low but the canopies allowed to grow high. In the cellar Fred relies on spontaneous fermentation and extended time on lees but says he works without a standard ‘recipe’ in order to be free to adapt from year to year, and from grape to grape.
Fred began practicing biodynamics in 2006 and is a founding member of Respekt, a certifying body for biodynamic viticulture in Austria.
Lois
"This is Loimer's Grüner Veltliner. This is LangenLois – home of our estate. And this is Lois Loimer, our first-born."
Sites and Climate
The interplay of soil and climate form the basic character of the wines from the Kamptal. The influence of the Pannonian climate from Hungary to the east brings hot, dry days to the area. And the cool air currents from the Waldviertel region to the north help spice up those hot daytime Kamptal temperatures, which reach up to 38° Celsius. The soils are just as unique - and ideal for wine growing. Found here is Gföhler gneiss, the primary rock of which the hills of the Kamptal are composed. Thisis covered by a layer of brown soil, though, at various points, a chalky layer is nestled between them. Also in the area is loess, airborne dust deposited during the ice age and that metamorphosedinto fertile soil. And finally, there are clay soils, which are found along the banks of the Kamp river.
The grapes for LOIS originate in the vineyards around Langenlois and throughout the Kamptal.
Vinification
The grapes were harvested in October with 16,5° - 17,5° KMW (Klosterneuburger Mostwaage; around 84 – 90 Öchsle) and brought gently to the estate in small boxes. Depending on quality, they were then pressed partly whole bunch and partly shortly after maceration (after destemming, the grapes rest before they are pressed) which generally results in a broader array of aromas. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, LOIS was matured on fine lees and bottled in January in order to retain freshness and primary aromas as much as possible.

Fred Loimer
For several years now, he has been at the pinnacle of the Austrian wine scene. As both a wine lover and quality fanatic, Fred Loimer says: "I am glad that wine now rates so highly with the young generation. In fact, sometimes very formal tastings go against the grain with me. Wine is about having fun; enjoying life. Too much academic seriousness is simply not a good thing.”
Tasting notes
LOIS is purely aromatic and lively!!! With lovely aromas of fresh apples, this wine surprises with its incomparable attractive spiciness. Notes of exotic fruit and the typical acidity of the Kamptal make LOIS a special drinking experience.
