teAwatea takes its name from the legendary ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning "Eye of the Dawn”) that sailed the Auckland – Sydney – Wellington route in the late 1930’s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.
This wine has a fragrant nose featuring damson plums and blackberry liqueur, with touches of vanilla and spice. The palate is ripe, juicy and elegant with fresh and preserved raspberry and blackberry fruit flavours.
Bullnose is a blend of three clones of syrah, hand harvested in April. These separate parcels were each destemmed and given a traditional warm-plunged fermentation. The resulting wines underwent extended maceration on skins before pressing and malolactic fermentation. They were then run into a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barriques for 16 months’ maturation.
Bullnose has a youthful deep ruby colour, with floral, plum and dark cherry aromas on the nose. In the mouth delicious plum, cherry syrup and raspberry flavours combine with vanilla and spice, while the ripe fruit tannins are silky and even. It will continue to evolve in bottle for eight years from harvest.
