Medhurst Wines: "Estate Grown, Low Cropped, Hand Made"

Medhurst Wines is the realisation of the long held and shared vision of Ross and Robyn Wilson to make wines of provenance from their Yarra Valley property. Each Medhurst wine reflects the site and variety from which it is made and the season in which it is grown.

The Medhurst Vineyard was particularly chosen for its favourable microclimate, north facing slopes, good drainage and magnificent aspect. It was planted in 2000 with chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.

With the sole objective of making the best wine possible, careful vineyard management ensures yields are low, averaging two tonnes per acre and providing intensely flavoured fruit.

Each parcel of fruit receives the same care and attention in the winery as in the vineyard. New and older French oak is used after considering the potential for each parcel. The wines that result are released only when they are ready and are of the standard to which Medhurst is committed. At all times quality is paramount.

Tasting Notes

Yarra Valley, Victoria. The hand picked grapes were fermented on skins in an open fermenter. During this  time the skins are hand plunged daily to extract the flavours and tannins. The resulting wine then undergoes twelve months maturation in French oak barrels. During this time the barrels are sampled and only those showing the right mix of complexity and elegance are chosen for the Medhurst label. This is an elegant cool climate Pinot with a delicate nose and long soft palate. Drinking beautifully now and could be cellared for up to five years.

This site has a north/west aspect and a moderate slope with good drainage. The vines are on a Vertical Shoot Position (VSP) trellis. This allows for the canopy to be open and airy for disease control yet provide shade for the development of the delicate Pinot Noir flavours and aromas. The block sees a late start to the day due to the hills to the east of the property but this is made up for by attracting the heat of the day for longer because of its aspect. Control of water and crop levels are used to maintain fruit quality. This is also enhanced by careful thinning of the fruit at veraison.
