Mountadam Eden Valley Riesling
The cool climate and unique geology of the Eden Valley produces Riesling of distinctive character which rewards aging. The young wine shows gentle spice and rose-petal aromas with intense fruit and citrus flavours. This wine is exclusively from the same 4 ha Eden Valley vineyard Mountadam has used since 2006.
Planted in 1972 the contoured north facing vineyard ranges in elevation between 370 – 410 m and is planted to traditional 6ft by 2ft spacing. Hand manicured to 70,000 buds per ha the vines grow in quartz rich, free draining acidic soils with naturally low organic content. Geologically the site is typical of the Eden Valley, underlain by schists formed in the Cambrian era about 500 million years ago.
Harvest/Vinification
Hand harvesting with further manual grading (as is the standard now at Mountadam), occurred at the end of March, before a slow, cool 28 day fermentation using our own natural cultured yeast.
The wine has received only a single filtration – the mandatory one at its bottling. This has been achieved by not disturbing the wine and allowing it to clarify naturally over 11 weeks.
This dry young wine shows an intense citrus core with pristine ripe grape flavours enveloped in delicate nuances of cloves, rose petals. With time, these qualities will be transformed into classic toast and honey characters. This wine will have at least a 10 year aging window.
