Pale yellow-grey, with very bright green hint, very good brilliance.
Very intense on the first nose with a complex of 'minerals' (flinty, gunpowder), fruit (pear) and floral (spring flowers). The aeration brings more fruit character, with some tropical fruit (banana, passionfruit) and a fermentary note (yeasty, nutty) combined with more flint hints. The nose seems to spiral around these aromas.
Following on the nose intensity, the mouthfeel is on the same level, with power, texture and length. The refreshing acidity gives the balance, complementing a creamy texture. The aromas are dominated by pear with an almost, and surprisingly, chalky note. The great length is carried by the fine acidity and some more aromatic notes revealing a touch of peach.
2008 is the first vintage of a selection of viognier from the top part of the '500' block, an exciting evolution of the Fairbank Viognier. Made in marginally different way, with fermentation and maturation only in concrete, the wine is more about Sutton Grange than viognier. It combines power and finesse, and would be a sophisticated aperitif or match some refined dishes.
