Bethany, Barossa Valley
The cycle of life in the Barossa vines has been turning for over 150 years, since the Schrapel family planted their first vineyards in 1852. The family arrived in South Australia from Silesia and made their home in Bethany, the Barossa Valley’s first settlement. Today, with Bethany Wines being run by fifth and sixth generations of the same Schrapel family, the vines life cycle continues in much the same way as it always has, with minimal intervention from others so they can produce the best possible grapes and wines.
Eden Valley Riesling 2023
Crafted from Riesling grapes grown in South Australia’s Eden Valley, this wine displays the brilliant pale gold colour so typical of the area, home of many of Australia’s greatest Rieslings. It has an abundance of pure, fresh lemon and tropical characters on both nose and palate, and a crisp, tangy finish. Delicate mineral acidity provides great length. It is an ideal accompaniment to most seafoods, and is the perfect ‘welcome’ wine for whenever friends drop in. Careful cellaring for three to five years will allow it to develop further depth of flavour and complexity.
Vineyard Notes
Eden Valley is a cool climate region nestled between 400 and 600 metres above sea level and is part of the Barossa and Mount Lofty Ranges. It is rough, rocky country that belies its ability to produce wines of great delicacy and finesse. The soils are derived from schistic and sedimentary rock with red clay soils and sandy, silty loams interspersed with schistic gravels. The cooler climate of the Eden Valley allows fruit to experience longer ripening periods which is perfect for flavour accumulation and intensity.
