MOUNT LANGI GHIRAN
The vineyards of Mount Langi Ghiran are nestled in the Grampians, between two dramatically beautiful mountain ranges on the southern edge of the Great Dividing Range, 180km west of Melbourne. Pronounced "Mount Langee Jeeran", the name is Aboriginal for "Home of the Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoo". The governing principle at Mount Langi Ghiran is to preserve their longstanding dedication to quality by ensuring that vineyard cropping yields are kept low and that wines are produced using traditional winemaking practices and minimal intervention.
Winemaker Comments
Consistent with our approach to getting the most from these old vines, this wine was harvested from successive passes through the Old Block over several weeks. By hand selecting choice fruit from these old vines, the best parcels could be separated allowing for this fine wine to shine though. This method leaves a considerable portion of fruit on the vine, but permits the exclusion of shriveled fruit as well as green berries. Moreover, this process responds to the natural variation within the vineyard block caused by aspect, warmth and exposure to wind and sunlight. A small percentage of whole bunch fermentation adds perfume and lift to the nose, and builds further tannic structure.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Dark purple with dark red hues.
Nose: Complex wine showing blueberry, raspberry and mixed spices. Delicately perfumed, the wine shows violet and sous bois characters.
Palate: Dense and tight, with finely structured tannins building on the palate. The wine is tightly wound and restrained with years to go before its full savoury and fruit complexity shines through. The wine continues on the palate with ripe blueberry and raspberry fruits, complex spices and tight acidity adding length and definition.
