Vietti Moscato d’Asti DOCG
For the past four generations, the Vietti family has been producing wine in Castiglione Falletto, a small village located in the centre of the Langhe region of Piedmont, from their vineyards located across the five communes designated for the cultivation and production of Barolo. Over recent years Luca Currado- Vietti had taken over the winemaking direction from his late father Alfredo, and Luca’s brother-in-law Mario Cordero responsibility for sales and marketing from Luca’s mother Luciana. Luca’s wife Elena Penna assists with administration and public relations. Each family member is closely linked to the overall objective, to produce the highest quality wines, whilst retaining respect for the traditions of the specific appellations. Vineyard acquisitions primarily during the 1980s and 1990s, across the Barolo communes and in Asti, have seen the total Vietti holdings grow to 32 hectares. Luca Currado-Vietti is not looking to increase production, but rather to achieve better control over fruit quality, and over winemaking and with their new winery.
Terrain
Clay, lime soils tending to calcareous. The vines are planted in one of the most highly regarded sub- regions within the appellation of Moscato d’Asti, Castiglione Tinella, at an average density of 4,500 vines per hectare. The average age of the vines is 34 years.
Grape Variety Moscato bianco 100%
Alcohol 5.5%
Fermentation
Harvest occurs around the 5-10th of September. Made from select batches of grapes which are gently crushed before being centrifuged, and filtered only lightly, to retain fruit and aroma. The purified must is pumped into sealed tanks where it is fermented after being inoculated with selected yeasts. Natural carbon dioxide is retained during this process, however for Moscato d’Asti the fermentation is stopped earlier by rapid chilling, while the pressure is still low and the alcohol at between 5 and 6%. There is no malo-lactic fermentation to preserve acidity and freshness. The bottle is stoppered with an ordinary cork and Vietti Moscato d’Asti is best when consumed young and fresh.
