Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montelpulciano DOCG 2019

Region
Established in 1961, Poliziano has in the space of forty years moved from the original nucleus of 22 hectares purchased by owner Dr. Federico Carletti’s father, to 240 hectares, of which 120 are cultivated with DOC and DOCG vineyards, and 8 hectares are dedicated to the production of this wine Le Stanze Del Poliziano. Le Stanze, Poliziano believes, demonstrates the importance of the terrain of Montepulciano to the production of fi ne wines for ageing from varieties and styles on an international level. Federico Carletti is responsible for the recent leaps forward in terms of quality, especially over the past 10-15 years. Less favourably situated vineyards have thus been eliminated with significant replanting of selected clones and rootstocks, in planned planting layouts complemented by specific pruning techniques, forming the major part of Federico’s improvements. More recently a state of the art winery has been established at Montepulciano Stazione.

Terrain: Sandy clay soils rich in marine deposits

Grape Varieties: Sangiovese Prugnolo Gentile 90%, Canaiolo Nero and Mammolo 10%

Harvest: Winter was very cold and wet with below average temperatures bringing much rain and snow. Despite a quite wet May and June budburst was quite regular, however fruit set was effected with resultant yields below the norm. From the end of June, there was a long period of sunny and warm weather, with peaks of around 35C during the last week of July. August was brought about perfect conditions for veraison, temperatures slightly below average, but with an above average diurnal shift especially into September. These conditions slowed maturation allowing flavour to build in line with physiological ripeness beautifully and resulting in a later harvest, especially in comparison to other harvest dates in the past decade. 2010 has the potential to be a truly great vintage also in terms of longevity.

Alcohol 13.5%

Method
The varieties are fermented separately in stainless steel vats, with the alcoholic fermentation lasting about 10-18 days, at a maximum temperature of 32 degrees Celsius. The wine is matured for two years in French oak barrels of varying sizes, followed by a period of 6-8 months in bottle prior to release.
